Terror Attack Targets Election Security in Pakistan; Four Policemen Killed
In a tragic incident, at least four policemen on election duty were killed in a terror attack in the Kulachi area of Dera Ismail Khan district in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa region. Unidentified gunmen set off a bomb and opened fire on the election security vehicle, leaving six others injured. The vehicle was stationed in the Kalachi police station jurisdiction for the security of the Graha Aslam polling station.

- The attack occurred in the restive Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province, bordering Afghanistan.
- The victims’ bodies and the injured were taken to the hospital, and security forces cordoned off the area, initiating a search operation.
- The attackers targeted a vehicle assigned to election security duties as the country conducts general elections.

- As of now, no individual or group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
- The area has previously been a stronghold of the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, known for multiple attacks against security forces.

- This attack follows twin terror attacks in Balochistan province that claimed at least 30 lives the day before.
- Grenade attacks were reported in different parts of Balochistan on the same day, though polling in the region remained unaffected.

- The suspension of mobile services in Pakistan due to the “deteriorating security situation” has been noted.
- Despite security challenges, Pakistan’s Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja assured that the Election Management System is not dependent on the Internet, ensuring the continuity of the election process.
Ongoing General Elections:
- Polling for the general elections began at 8:00 am and will continue until 5:00 pm.
- Over 128 million registered voters are eligible to cast their votes.
