TDP Urges Election Commission to Revise Andhra Pradesh Electoral Rolls

The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) has approached the Election Commission of India (ECI), advocating for a comprehensive revision of the electoral rolls in Andhra Pradesh. A delegation of TDP leaders, including Atchen Naidu, the state unit president, submitted a detailed representation in New Delhi on Tuesday.

In their letter to the ECI, the TDP leaders accused District Election Officers (DEOs) and Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) of not adhering to ECI guidelines for maintaining error-free electoral rolls. They alleged that these officials were under political pressure from the ruling party, specifically citing undue influence from ministers and MLAs.

Demands for Special Oversight and Task Force Formation

The TDP called on the ECI to deploy Special Observers in the state. They also requested the formation of a special task force and suggested the removal of Secretariat staff from their roles as Booth-Level Officers (BLOs).

The delegation referenced an earlier representation dated August 28, 2023, by Nara Chandrababu Naidu, TDP President and Leader of the Opposition in the State Assembly. In that document, Chandrababu Naidu accused the ruling YSRCP of political vendetta and misuse of state machinery, along with raising concerns about the deteriorating law and order situation in Andhra Pradesh.

    Issues in Electoral Roll Maintenance

According to the TDP, EROs have not adequately processed numerous cases of deceased individuals, duplicate entries, or permanently migrated voters. They also alleged that during door-to-door verifications conducted by the TDP, many voters were found untraceable. Furthermore, the TDP claimed that EROs were being compelled to delete names of genuine voters who are perceived as TDP sympathisers.

    Call for ECI’s Intervention

The TDP expressed its firm belief that the ECI understands the seriousness of the situation in Andhra Pradesh. They urged the Commission to take decisive actions to uphold democracy in the state, leveraging its constitutional authority to ensure fair and transparent electoral processes.
