Taiwan Reports Increased Chinese Military Activity
Key Highlights:
- Seven Chinese military aircraft and five naval vessels detected around Taiwan over the weekend.
- One aircraft breached Taiwan’s Southwest Air Defence Identification Zone.
- Taiwan’s armed forces respond with monitoring and deployment of combat assets.
Taiwan’s Ministry of Defence (MND) detected heightened Chinese military presence around Taiwan, with seven aircraft and five naval vessels operating in the vicinity over the weekend. Notably, one aircraft crossed into Taiwan’s Southwest Air Defence Identification Zone (ADIZ) via the Taiwan Strait median line.
Responding to this, Taiwan deployed combat patrol aircraft, naval vessels, and coastal missile systems to monitor the situation, as reported by Taiwan’s MND. Similar actions were taken when nine aircraft and five naval vessels were detected operating around Taiwan the previous day.
According to Taiwan News, Chinese military aircraft have been spotted 39 times and naval vessels 21 times in May alone. This escalation follows China’s intensified use of “gray zone tactics,” characterized by increased military presence near Taiwan without resorting to direct force, as outlined by CSIS.
