    Key Highlights:

    1. 23 Chinese military aircraft and 7 naval vessels detected around Taiwan.
    2. 19 aircraft crossed Taiwan Strait median line into Taiwan’s ADIZ.
    3. Taiwan deployed aircraft, naval ships, and missile systems in response.

The Ministry of National Defence (MND) in Taiwan reported the detection of 23 Chinese military aircraft and seven naval vessels around Taiwan from 6 am Sunday to 6 am Monday, local time. Of the 23 People’s Liberation Army (PLA) aircraft, 19 breached the Taiwan Strait median line, entering Taiwan’s air defense identification zone (ADIZ) from the northern, southwestern, and eastern sectors.

In response, Taiwan dispatched aircraft and naval ships and deployed coastal-based missile systems to monitor the PLA’s activities.

On June 23, the MND tracked 15 Chinese military aircraft and six naval vessels encircling Taiwan. In total, Taiwan has tracked Chinese military aircraft 324 times and naval/coast guard vessels 190 times so far this month.

China has intensified its use of gray zone tactics since September 2020, incrementally increasing the number of military aircraft and naval ships operating around Taiwan. These tactics aim to achieve security objectives without direct and sizable use of force.

This incident adds to a series of provocations by China in recent months. Regular air and naval incursions into Taiwan’s ADIZ have become more frequent, reflecting China’s ongoing assertion of sovereignty over Taiwan. China views Taiwan as part of its territory and insists on eventual reunification, potentially by force.

Additionally, Taiwan’s MND reported a recent incident involving a Chinese rocket carrying a satellite that passed over southern Taiwan. The rocket was launched from the Xichang Satellite Launch Centre in Sichuan, China. Taiwan monitored the launch closely and tracked the rocket’s real-time information through intelligence and surveillance systems, alerting the public in advance.

These developments underscore the heightened military tensions between China and Taiwan, with increased Chinese military activities challenging Taiwan’s airspace and maritime boundaries.
