Supreme Court Withholds Interim Bail Decision for Arvind Kejriwal
The Supreme Court, presided over by Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta, refrained from issuing any order on interim bail for Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in the Delhi Excise Policy case. Despite hearing arguments on the matter, the bench rose without delivering a verdict, scheduling further proceedings for Thursday or the following week.
During the hearing, the court emphasized its reluctance to allow Kejriwal to perform official duties, citing a desire to prevent interference in government operations. The apex court underscored the extraordinary circumstances surrounding Kejriwal’s plea, coinciding with the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.
Meanwhile, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Enforcement Directorate (ED), voiced objections to the court’s consideration of interim bail for Kejriwal. He argued against granting special treatment to politicians, highlighting the need to uphold equal treatment under the law.
The ED, further asserting the non-political nature of the case, revealed details about Kejriwal’s stay at a luxury hotel during the 2022 Goa Assembly election, alleging financial irregularities in campaign funding. Kejriwal, arrested on March 21 in connection with money laundering allegations related to the Delhi excise policy, remains in judicial custody at Tihar Jail.
