Supreme Court Weighs Interim Bail for Arvind Kejriwal
- The Supreme Court expressed concerns over granting interim bail to Arvind Kejriwal.
- It emphasized that if bail is granted, Kejriwal should refrain from official duties to avoid interference.
- The court resumes arguments on the case, considering the extraordinary circumstances during ongoing elections.
The Supreme Court deliberated on granting interim bail to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, cautioning that if granted, he should refrain from official duties to prevent interference in government functioning. Emphasizing the need to avoid conflicts, the court indicated that it would not have considered interim relief if not for the ongoing elections.
Acknowledging Kejriwal’s elected status and the unique circumstances of the case amid the elections, the court scheduled further arguments later in the day, possibly leading to a decision on interim bail. However, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta objected to the court’s consideration of bail, questioning the precedence it sets and urging equal treatment for all individuals.
Mehta argued against carving out exceptions for politicians, highlighting Kejriwal’s six-month evasion of summons and cautioning against demoralizing the common citizen by offering special treatment based on political positions. Meanwhile, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) presented evidence, including Kejriwal’s stay at a luxury hotel during elections, paid allegedly with campaign funds.
Kejriwal, arrested in March on charges related to a money laundering probe, remains in judicial custody at Tihar Jail, pending further legal proceedings.
