The much-anticipated judgment on pleas seeking legal validation for same-sex marriage is scheduled to be delivered by the Supreme Court on Tuesday. A five-judge constitution bench led by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud had reserved its verdict on the pleas on May 11 after an exhaustive 10-day hearing. The other members of the bench include Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul, S Ravindra Bhat, Hima Kohli, and P S Narasimha.
The Supreme Court will release the judgment on Tuesday, with the information promptly updated on the Supreme Court website, according to sources. During the arguments, the Centre had expressed reservations about making any constitutional declaration on same-sex marriage legalization, arguing that it might not be the correct course of action as the court cannot predict or manage the potential consequences. The Centre also informed the court that it had received responses from seven states regarding same-sex marriage, with the governments of Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, and Assam opposing the petitioners’ request for legal endorsement of such marriages.
The court had initiated the hearing of arguments on April 18.
