Enhancing Bilateral Cooperation
In a significant development, Admiral M Nazmul Hassan, Chief of the Naval Staff of the Bangladesh Navy, embarked on his maiden foreign visit to India, marking a pivotal moment in bolstering military ties between the two nations. This visit, which occurred in September, comes as a testament to the growing partnership between India and Bangladesh, characterized by shared values, historical connections, and a commitment to cooperation.
A Diplomatic Agenda
Admiral Hassan’s five-day official visit, spanning from September 12th to 16th, was marked by a series of high-level meetings and discussions aimed at deepening the collaboration between the naval forces of India and Bangladesh. Among his notable engagements were meetings with the Chief of Defence Staff, Chief of Naval Staff, Defence Secretary, and Foreign Secretary of India, along with interactions with other key government officials.
Agenda for Cooperation
During these bilateral interactions, several crucial matters were on the agenda. The leaders discussed the prospect of coordinated patrols along the International Maritime Boundary Line, the execution of the bilateral naval exercise known as Bongosagar, opportunities for naval training, and the exchange of delegations. Admiral Hassan also paid his respects at the National War Memorial and received a ceremonial Guard of Honour during his visit to the South Block in New Delhi, where he met with India’s Chief of the Naval Staff, Admiral R Hari Kumar.

The discussions between the two naval chiefs delved into multifaceted aspects of cooperation. This included considerations regarding joint operations, training initiatives, information sharing, and participation in various multilateral constructs. Beyond the strategic realm, both countries recognize the need for greater synergy and collaboration across a spectrum of activities.
