Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha officially opened the two-day National Workshop of the Smart Cities Mission, focusing on the theme of ‘Streets & Public Spaces,’ in Srinagar on a Thursday.

During his speech, LG Sinha underscored the significance of vibrant public spaces in addition to modern infrastructure and amenities. He highlighted how these spaces can enhance the aesthetic appeal of a city, improve the quality of life for its residents, and bring about positive transformations in the lives of citizens.

LG Sinha also commended Srinagar’s Smart City initiative as a model for other cities across the nation. He lauded the city’s impactful pedestrian plazas and recreational areas along its waterfronts, emphasizing that the city’s excellent urban design has encapsulated its unique character and soul.

During the inaugural session, the Lieutenant Governor elaborated on various initiatives undertaken in Srinagar. These included the creation of the Srinagar Square, the beautification of riverfront ghats to promote water transport, the revitalization of the lakefront, heritage conservation efforts in the Old City, and the enhancement of underutilized spaces.

He portrayed Srinagar as a source of inspiration for urban planning experts.He further highlighted that the development of Srinagar Smart City followed a people-centric approach, incorporating elements of traditional art, culture, heritage, smart infrastructure, efficient governance, and sustainability.

This approach aimed to ensure social equity and provide a high quality of life to the city’s residents.LG Sinha stressed the importance of cities evolving to meet the changing needs and rising aspirations of their populations.

He emphasized the necessity for cities to remain adaptable, responding to the citizens’ demands, competitive dynamics, and market fluctuations while fostering core competencies for economic growth.
