Sony Pauses PS VR2 Production Due to Unsold Units
Sony Group has decided to halt production of its PS VR2 headset temporarily to address a backlog of unsold units, reflecting challenges in the virtual reality (VR) market. Despite launching the $550 accessory for PlayStation 5 last February, sales have been declining steadily, leading to accumulating stocks of the device.
Declining Sales and Stock Accumulation
Since its debut, PS VR2 shipments have witnessed a consistent decrease each quarter, resulting in an oversupply of assembled devices across Sony’s supply chain. Although the company has reportedly produced over 2 million units, demand has failed to meet expectations. IDC data reveals a downward trend in shipments to retailers, underscoring the challenges faced by the VR market.
Market Outlook and Apple’s Influence
While Sony and Meta Platforms have been prominent players in the VR market, both have struggled to attract sufficient content creators and entertainment offerings. The entry of Apple into the VR realm with the Vision Pro headset also faces hurdles, lacking tailored apps from major entertainment platforms like Netflix and YouTube. Despite the current setbacks, IDC forecasts growth in the VR market, anticipating a recovery in the coming years.
Sony’s Response and Industry Challenges
Sony’s recent decision to shutter its PlayStation London division, which focused on VR game development, reflects the broader challenges in the VR industry. High hardware costs and limited content availability hinder market expansion. The development cost for VR games is notably higher than traditional titles, further limiting content creation and user motivation.
Future Plans and Content Expansion
Despite the temporary production pause, Sony remains committed to expanding content offerings for the PS VR2. In February, the company announced plans to test compatibility with PC titles, aiming to enhance the headset’s appeal and address content limitations. As the VR market evolves, Sony continues to explore strategies to drive adoption and engagement among consumers.
