Shashi Tharoor, a prominent author and former diplomat turned politician, was awarded the ‘Chevalier de la Legion d’honneur,’ France’s highest civilian honour, in a ceremony held at the French Embassy. The award, announced by the French government in August 2022, was officially conferred upon Tharoor on Tuesday by French Senate President Gerard Larcher.
Acknowledging Tireless Efforts for Indo-French Ties
The French Embassy highlighted Tharoor’s tireless efforts in deepening Indo-French ties, commitment to international peace, and being a long-standing friend of France as the basis for conferring this prestigious honour. Gerard Larcher, Chairman of the French Senate, praised Tharoor’s outstanding career as a diplomat, author, and politician, describing him as someone who has embraced the world with a thirst for knowledge.
Tharoor’s Impact and Friendship with France
Larcher emphasized Tharoor’s understanding of French culture and recognized him as a true friend of France. Tharoor, in accepting the award, expressed his immense honor, viewing it not just as an individual achievement but also as a celebration of the collective efforts to foster cultural exchange and diplomatic ties between India and France.
Promoting Friendship and Cooperation Between India and France
In his acceptance speech, Tharoor expressed his commitment to nurturing the friendship between India and France, fostering cooperation for the betterment of the shared global community. He reflected on a defining moment during his French trip in 2002, underscoring the significance of France’s reverence for its writers.
Tharoor’s remarks included a poignant memory of witnessing the interment of Alexandre Dumas, where he remarked on the French’s exceptional ability to honor their writers. He concluded by pledging to continue efforts to uphold the common values that connect the two nations.
Historical Significance of the Legion d’honneur
Instituted by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802, the Legion d’honneur holds historical significance as the highest civilian award by the French Republic, recognizing outstanding service to France regardless of the recipient’s nationality. The ceremony was attended by notable figures, including French envoy Thierry Mathou, India’s G20 sherpa Amitabh Kant, and Congress leader Anand Sharma, further highlighting the significance of this prestigious recognition.
