Severe cold persisted in J-k
Severe cold persisted in Jammu and Kashmir, with Pahalgam registering a frigid temperature of minus 11.0°C and Gulmarg at minus 10.5°C on Tuesday, as reported by officials.
According to a meteorological department spokesperson, Srinagar experienced a low of minus 2.4°C compared to the previous night’s minus 0.4°C, marking a deviation of 2.0°C below the usual temperatures for this time of the year in the summer capital of J&K. Qazigund recorded a minimum of minus 2.0°C, which was 0.5°C below the normal temperature for this gateway town in Kashmir.
Pahalgam saw a low of minus 11.0°C, down from minus 11.9°C the previous night, displaying a deviation of 4.8°C below the normal temperature for this renowned resort in south Kashmir. In Kokernag, also in south Kashmir, the minimum temperature was minus 2.4°C compared to minus 3.3°C the previous night, with a deviation of 0.4°C below normal.
Moving to north Kashmir, Kupwara town recorded a low of minus 3.4°C, down from minus 0.9°C the previous night, reflecting a deviation of 1.4°C below the normal temperature. Gulmarg, the famous skiing resort in north Kashmir, recorded a low of minus 10.5°C, which was 3.8°C below the normal temperature.
Jammu experienced a minimum temperature of 6.0°C, below normal by 3.5°C for the winter capital of J&K. Banihal recorded a low of minus 1.8°C, Batote at minus 0.3°C, and Bhaderwah at minus 1.8°C, as per the official.
Looking ahead, the meteorological official forecasted dry weather until February 13. Despite the end of the 40-day harsh winter period known as ‘Chillai-Kalan’ on January 29, Kashmir is currently in the midst of the 20-day-long ‘Chillai-Khurd,’ ending on February 19, followed by the 10-day period ‘Chillai-Bachha’ (baby cold) from February 20 to March 1.
