Road Accidents in India Surge by 12% in 2022
A recent government report reveals that India experienced a 12% increase in road accidents in 2022, with speeding being a major contributing factor to these incidents and fatalities across the country. The report released by the transport ministry indicates that 4,61,312 road accidents occurred in 2022 compared to 4,12,432 in 2021, representing an 11.9% rise. Tragically, the accidents resulted in 1,68,491 fatalities and 4,43,366 injuries, marking a 9.4% increase in deaths and a 15.3% rise in injuries from the previous year.
Major Factors Contributing to Road Accidents
Speeding was the leading cause of over 3.3 lakh road accidents in 2022, with the report also attributing accidents to rash driving, drink driving, and traffic rule violations. According to the report, “in 2022, under the category of Traffic Rule Violations, overspeeding is a major killer, accounting for 71.2 percent of the persons killed, followed by driving on the wrong side (5.4%).”

Alcohol and Red Light Violations
The data highlighted a concerning number of accidents involving alcohol, with over 10,000 accidents occurring due to driving under the influence of alcohol. Furthermore, accidents resulting from red light violations surged from 2,203 in 2021 to 4,021 in 2022, an 82.55% increase in a year.
Lack of Safety Gear
The report also emphasized the importance of safety gear. In 2022, more than 50,000 people died in motorcycle accidents where they were not wearing helmets. Notably, 71.3% of these individuals were drivers, and 28.7% were passengers. Additionally, 16,715 individuals who were not wearing seat belts lost their lives in road accidents, with 8,384 being drivers and 8,331 passengers.
