Punjab HC Criticizes Government and Police Over Drug Menace
The Punjab and Haryana High Court issued a strong rebuke to the Punjab government and its police for what it referred to as “non-action in the face of a drug menace” plaguing the state. The court highlighted the rare appearances of police personnel to provide statements as witnesses and expressed concern over the apparent collusion between the drug mafia and the police. The judges emphasized the importance of addressing the issue promptly, given Punjab’s status as a border state with heightened sensitivity.
Collusion Allegations and Ineffectiveness
The High Court did not mince words in its criticism, asserting that the government and police had failed and eroded the trust of the entire country. The judges expressed disappointment in the government’s lack of action and suggested that the police were cooperating with the drug mafia. They questioned the effectiveness of the Director General of Police (DGP) and the state government.
Demand for Apology and Immediate Action
The High Court demanded that the police chief issue an apology and take immediate action. It emphasized that mere assurances to the court were insufficient, and concrete steps were needed to address the drug problem. The judges also urged the government to put its affairs in order and specified a timeframe for taking action.
