Puducherry Announces School Holidays Amidst Heavy Rains
Following the Indian Meteorological Department’s (IMD) ‘orange alert’ for extremely heavy rainfall in Puducherry, Karaikal, and Tamil Nadu, Puducherry’s Education Minister, A Namachivayam, has declared a holiday for all private and government schools in the region. This precautionary measure comes as a response to the IMD’s warning of intense downpours expected to affect the area.
Heavy Rains Lash Tamil Nadu
Several districts in Tamil Nadu have experienced heavy rainfall, with Nagapattinam witnessing showers and parts of Coimbatore facing torrential downpours on Tuesday night. The state has been under the spell of moderate to heavy rains for several weeks, leading to repeated school closures in affected areas.
Schools Shut in Multiple Districts
In line with the IMD’s forecast, schools in Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Dindigul, and Madurai will remain closed. The Tamil Nadu government had earlier declared a holiday for educational institutions in Mayiladuthurai District due to similar weather predictions. The consistent heavy rains have resulted in waterlogging in various parts of the state, including Tiruvannamalai and Erode, affecting residential areas.
Monsoon Season in Southern India
The heavy rainfall in southern India, including Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, is attributed to the northeast monsoon, also known as the winter monsoon. Occurring between October and December, this monsoon is a smaller-scale version of the southwest monsoon, predominantly affecting the southern peninsula.
