Programmer Builds 12-Legged Walking Coffee Table, Inspired by Crab Movement
A programmer, Giliam de Carpentier, from Guerrilla Games, has designed a 12-legged walking coffee table called Carpentopod, resembling a crab. The table’s legs were evolved through algorithmic simulations, rather than being manually crafted, resulting in an efficient design that mimics smooth, tank-like movement. CNC-machined from laminated bamboo, the table’s legs are powered by two motors, each controlling six legs via crankshafts.
De Carpentier’s unique approach involved custom software that evolved virtual leg designs based on walking efficiency. Autodesk Fusion 360 helped model the structure, and an Arduino Nano manages motor control. His table is capable of wireless movement and even delivers drinks, with plans to release its leg linkage as public domain for others to build their own.
