President Droupadi Murmu visited the Siachen base camp on Thursday, paying tribute to the bravery of soldiers posted at the world’s highest battlefield. Addressing the troops, she expressed immense pride in their sacrifice and dedication, particularly in the face of extreme conditions, including temperatures as low as minus 50 degrees Celsius.
As the supreme commander of the armed forces, Murmu stated that every Indian salutes the bravery of the soldiers who remain vigilant despite heavy snowfall and severe cold.
“In such difficult conditions, our soldiers show extraordinary examples of sacrifice and tolerance while protecting the motherland,” she said.
During her visit, Murmu, dressed in military attire, also paid her respects at the Siachen War Memorial. She acknowledged the memorial as a symbol of the sacrifices made by soldiers and officers since the launch of Operation Meghdoot on April 13, 1984.
Under this operation, the Indian Army gained full control over the Siachen Glacier, ensuring the security of this strategic region.
Murmu also reiterated that all citizens of India are aware of the soldiers’ sacrifices and honor their bravery. She was received by the Lt Governor of Ladakh, Brigadier B D Mishra, upon her arrival at Thoise airfield.
President Murmu is the third Indian President to visit the Siachen base camp, following A P J Abdul Kalam in 2004 and Ram Nath Kovind in 2018.
Located at an altitude of 20,000 feet in the Karakoram range, Siachen is known as the highest militarized zone in the world, where soldiers face extreme weather challenges daily.
