The power crisis in Jammu and Kashmir is spiraling out of control, leaving local consumers in the lurch. Despite promises of round-the-clock electricity supply with the installation of smart meters in half of Srinagar city, residents are now enduring daily power cuts lasting a mere 4-5 hours. This frustrating situation has persisted for over two weeks, casting a shadow of uncertainty as winter approaches.
Government Initiatives and Hopes for a Brighter Future
Amidst the gloom, government authorities are actively seeking solutions to alleviate the power shortage in Jammu and Kashmir. Chief Engineer of the Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL), Javed Yousuf Dar, reveals ongoing discussions with entities such as NTPC to secure additional electricity for the region. The prospects of receiving extra power in the coming days raise hopes for a much-needed reprieve.

Debt and Environmental Factors Compound the Crisis
However, the chief engineer acknowledged an unsettling fact – a significant debt incurred from external electricity purchases. Furthermore, environmental factors, specifically low precipitation leading to reduced water levels in reservoirs, have hampered power generation at major plants. These challenges are contributing to the dire situation.

Despite the current turmoil, the Chief Engineer, KPDCL, remains optimistic. He assures residents that the issue is actively being addressed, with expectations of a resolution in the coming days.
