A Delhi court has reserved its order on the bail plea of jailed parliamentarian Sheikh Abdul Rashid, commonly known as Engineer Rashid, in connection with a 2017 Jammu and Kashmir terror funding case.
Rashid, currently lodged in Tihar Jail, has filed a petition seeking regular bail. The court’s decision is expected on September 4.
Engineer Rashid recently made headlines by winning the Baramulla seat in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, defeating former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah by a significant margin of 204,000 votes.
Despite being in jail, Rashid managed to secure a notable victory, raising questions about his political influence and public support in the region.
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has strongly opposed Rashid’s bail plea. The arguments were heard in an in-camera session by Additional Sessions Judge Chanderjit Singh, who has now reserved the order after a detailed hearing.
This isn’t the first time Rashid has faced legal challenges. In 2005, he was arrested by the Special Operations Group (SOG) in Srinagar for allegedly supporting militants and was detained for over three months.
The charges were later dropped by the Chief Judicial Magistrate of Srinagar on humanitarian grounds.
Rashid was arrested again in August 2019 under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) in relation to the 2017 terror funding case. During his incarceration, Rashid filed his nomination for the 2024 parliamentary elections and secured a landslide victory.
Earlier, in July 2024, the same court granted him a two-hour custody parole to allow him to take the oath as a Member of Parliament. Rashid’s political career, despite his legal troubles, remains a point of discussion in Indian political circles.
