Pakistani Journalist Imran Riaz Arrested Amidst Allegations of Corruption
Lahore, February 23: Imran Riaz Khan, a prominent Pakistani journalist known for his outspoken criticism of the military’s involvement in politics, found himself in judicial custody on Friday following allegations of corruption. This incident comes several months after his release in the aftermath of unprecedented attacks on military facilities.
Arrest and Allegations
Imran Riaz Khan, a popular TV anchor and YouTuber, was arrested and remanded to a 14-day judicial custody. He vehemently claimed innocence, insisting that he was a victim of a false case. The charges revolve around Khan and his father allegedly securing a contract related to Dharabi Lake in Chakwal at an inflated price, as per the Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) in Punjab.
Morning Raid and Reaction
The arrest unfolded in the morning as a significant police contingent raided Khan’s residence. Expressing frustration with the circumstances, Khan accused the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) of orchestrating his arrest. In a statement to reporters, he dramatized his arrest, linking it to political maneuvering and alleged electoral fraud.
“Handcuffs are slapped on my wrists to pay salute to Queen Maryam Nawaz, who is going to become Punjab chief minister. The queen is being made CM after stealing the people’s votes,” he declared defiantly.
History of Confrontation
This is not the first time Imran Riaz Khan has faced adversity. In May 2023, he was reportedly taken into custody by security agencies just days after the attacks on military installations orchestrated by the workers of the jailed former prime minister Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party. He was released in September 2023, following concerns about his safety raised by former Prime Minister Imran Khan.
Public Outcry and Political Response
Visuals of Khan’s arrest quickly went viral on social media, prompting the PTI party to condemn his detention. The party claimed that Khan had already endured “enforced disappearance” and “custodial torture” at the hands of the regime. Accusing the government of authoritarian practices, PTI argued that Imran Riaz Khan had consistently spoken out against electoral fraud and the regime’s alleged unconstitutional activities.
