Pakistan: PTI Leader Shah Mahmood Qureshi Appeals for Post-Arrest Bail in Cipher Case
Incarcerated PTI Vice Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi has moved the Supreme Court challenging the Islamabad High Court’s decision in the cipher case. Qureshi asserts that the IHC did not properly assess the facts, labeling the case against him as baseless and politically motivated.
Challenging IHC’s Decision
Qureshi’s plea questions the IHC’s dismissal of his post-arrest bail petition, emphasizing that the court failed to consider key bail principles. The petition argues that the allegations against Qureshi are limited to a public speech, distinguishing his role from the principal accused.
Parallel Pleas by PTI Leadership
This comes after PTI Chairman Imran Khan filed a similar plea earlier, presenting 15 legal questions related to the cipher case. Khan’s previous bail plea was rejected by the IHC on October 27, and both leaders are currently incarcerated at Adiala jail.
The cipher controversy, which unfolded in March 2022, involves Khan’s claim of a foreign conspiracy against his government. The National Security Committee took action, issuing a demarche to the US. Subsequent audio leaks implicated key figures, leading to a committee probe and FIA involvement.
