Pakistan JIT Submits Report on NADRA Data Leak

The Pakistan Joint Investigation Team (JIT) submitted a report to the interior ministry, addressing the leakage of citizens’ data by the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA). The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) directed the Interior Ministry to investigate the data leak in collaboration with the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), and Military Intelligence.

Extent of Data Breach and Recommendations

The report revealed that data of 2.7 million Pakistanis was compromised from 2019 to 2023, with involvement from NADRA offices in Multan, Peshawar, and Karachi. The stolen data was traced from Multan to Peshawar, then to Dubai, and was even sold in countries like Argentina and Romania. Consequently, the JIT recommended taking action against several senior officers of NADRA.

Response and Proposed Measures

Following the investigation, then-caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar received the report and directed NADRA to implement necessary actions based on the findings and recommendations. The proposed measures include regulatory actions and technology upgrades to enhance data security and protect citizens’ information. Authorities have initiated compliance measures in line with the Prime Minister’s directives.

The report highlighted that these measures aim to improve the delivery of emergency services and ensure standard database security, ultimately safeguarding citizens’ data integrity.
