OpenAI Challenges New York Times in Copyright Lawsuit Over AI Usage
In a legal battle that has grabbed attention, OpenAI has requested a federal judge to dismiss segments of the New York Times’ copyright lawsuit, claiming the newspaper engaged in “hacking” its artificial intelligence systems, particularly ChatGPT. The filing asserts that the Times, in an attempt to build a case, manipulated OpenAI’s technology with deceptive prompts, violating the platform’s terms of use and falling short of journalistic standards.
OpenAI boldly contends that the Times not only misled in its allegations but actually paid someone to hack their AI products. The technology company asserts that the Times deliberately induced its AI systems, including ChatGPT, to reproduce material through deceptive prompts, casting a shadow on OpenAI’s integrity and intentions.
AI Training Practices Under Scrutiny Amidst Legal Tussle
This legal conflict emerged when the New York Times filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and its major financial supporter, Microsoft. The lawsuit alleges the unauthorized usage of millions of articles for training chatbots, accusing OpenAI and Microsoft of attempting to capitalize on the Times’s extensive journalism investment. The Times cited instances where chatbots provided near-verbatim excerpts of its articles, claiming a violation of copyright.
OpenAI, in its response, emphasizes that generating highly anomalous results took tens of thousands of attempts by the Times. The company argues that such lawsuits pose a significant threat to the growth of the multitrillion-dollar AI industry, with tech companies asserting that their AI systems utilize copyrighted material fairly.
While representatives from the New York Times and OpenAI are yet to comment on the recent filing, the legal clash underscores the complex intersection of media, technology, and intellectual property rights, raising crucial questions about the boundaries and ethics of AI training practices.
