Odisha Power Generation Corporation Faces Allegations After Ash Pond Breach
Allegations have surfaced regarding a breach in an ash pond at the thermal plant of the Odisha Power Generation Corporation (OPGC), resulting in the flooding of farmland in several villages within the Jharsuguda district on Friday.
According to local villagers, an approximate 20-foot breach caused the wall surrounding the ash pond to collapse around 8 am on Friday, leading to the overflow of toxic slurry waste into nearby areas.
Reports indicate that the ash water inundated farmlands on the outskirts of Saradhapali, causing significant damage to crops spanning several acres.
The incident caused panic among the local residents, raising concerns about environmental contamination and agricultural losses.
Upon receiving information about the breach, officials from OPGC promptly arrived at the scene and assured the affected locals of necessary repairs to the ash pond.
They also pledged to conduct a thorough inquiry to assess the extent of the damage and provide compensation accordingly.
Himanshu Behera, the Public Relations Officer of OPGC, stated, “An inquiry has been initiated into the breach, and repair work will commence soon.
It appears that continuous rainfall may have weakened the ash pond wall, ultimately leading to the breach. However, conclusive findings will only emerge after a detailed investigation.”
As the situation unfolds, further details and updates regarding the incident are anticipated.
This breach highlights the potential environmental hazards associated with industrial operations and underscores the importance of stringent safety measures and regular inspections to prevent such incidents.
