NIA Charges Five Individuals Linked to Islamic State of Khorasan Province
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) filed a charge-sheet against five individuals associated with the Islamic State of Khorasan Province (ISKP), an ISIS affiliate, in a special court in Gujarat. The accused are Ubaid Nasir Mir, Hanan Hayat Shawl, Mohd Hazim Shah, Sumera Banu, and Zubair. They were allegedly planning to travel illegally to Afghanistan via Iran from Gujarat’s Porbandar for training and to carry out terrorist acts.
Arrest and Investigations by Gujarat ATS
The Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) arrested the five individuals, uncovering their active involvement with the ISKP, which operates in Afghanistan’s Khorasan province. Investigations revealed their engagement in recruiting youth and promoting ISKP’s violent agenda, including propagating its ideology on social media, radicalizing and indoctrinating vulnerable Muslim youth in India, and collecting funds for the terror organization.
International Connections and Ongoing Investigation
Two other suspects, believed to be in Afghanistan and Iran, are still at large and are considered the handlers of the arrested individuals. The case, having national security implications and international linkages, was transferred to the NIA by the Ministry of Home Affairs on June 28. The NIA subsequently registered the case under various sections of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and the Indian Penal Code, based on the initial FIR filed by the ATS in Ahmedabad. The NIA’s investigation into the case is ongoing.
