BJP Says Party Workers to Get Priority in Kolkata Civic Poll Tickets, Rules Out NCPI Quota
KOLKATA, October 24, 2026 [VoM News]: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has said its own workers will receive priority in the selection of candidates for the upcoming Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) elections, amid speculation that the NCPI could seek a share of the party’s tickets.
Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar, who heads the BJP panel overseeing local elections in West Bengal, said candidate selection would primarily depend on winnability, followed by the applicant’s association with the party. He added that the BJP would also consider bringing in capable people from outside politics.
“There is an SOP for the party’s candidacy, and we will follow it,” Majumdar said, adding that the selection process would include consultations at the grassroots level.
West Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya ruled out accommodating candidates backed by the NCPI, maintaining that the BJP had won public support through its own electoral efforts rather than relying on political defectors.
His remarks come amid political realignments following the BJP’s reported victory over the Trinamool Congress in West Bengal, with a section of former Trinamool lawmakers joining the NCPI and another group of MLAs forming a separate bloc.
The BJP has fixed October 26 at 5 pm as the deadline for submitting applications to contest the KMC elections. Majumdar said the party would begin scrutinising applications and consulting local-level workers after the deadline.
The candidate-selection process is expected to determine how the BJP balances loyalty to existing cadre with its stated interest in fielding candidates considered capable of winning.
