MQM Founder Accuses Military of Election Rigging
Muttahidda Qaumi Movement (MQM) founder Altaf Hussain has accused Pakistan’s ‘corrupt’ military generals of undermining the nation by orchestrating the ‘worst and unprecedented rigging’ in the general elections held on February 8. Speaking on the occasion of MQM’s 40th foundation day, Hussain highlighted the party’s journey from the All Pakistan Muhajir Students Organisation (APMSO) to MQM, emphasizing its popularity and nationwide appeal.
Military Operation and Resistance
Hussain recounted the military operation launched in 1992 to suppress MQM, citing attacks on residential colonies and attempts to weaken the party through splinter groups. Despite these challenges, he noted, MQM persevered, evolving into the Muttahida Qaumi Movement in 1997. He accused the military establishment of resorting to rigging in the February 8 elections to empower traitors and undermine public sentiment.
Condemnation and Economic Concerns
Expressing concern over Pakistan’s current situation, Hussain criticized the military for exacerbating economic woes, inflation, and social unrest. He condemned the military’s past actions against MQM, including operations, violence against party members, and attempts to stifle its influence. Despite these adversities, Hussain affirmed MQM’s resilience and expanding support base, highlighting the failure of military efforts to eradicate the party.
