The house arrest of Mirwaiz Umar Farooq continues as he was again barred from attending Friday prayers at the historic Jama Masjid in Srinagar. This marks the second consecutive Friday he has been prevented from fulfilling his religious duties.

In a statement released today, Mirwaiz strongly condemned the repeated restrictions imposed on his freedom. “It’s condemnable that again and again on Fridays I am disallowed from going to Jama Masjid,” he said, expressing deep frustration over the ongoing situation. “Yesterday, on the auspicious occasion of Shab-e-Baraat, not only was I put under house arrest, but even Jama Masjid was forcibly locked down and people were prevented from gathering. Today also I was not allowed to go to Jama Masjid.”

Mirwaiz emphasised his religious, social, and political responsibilities, stressing his commitment to peaceful dialogue for resolution. “I have always, as the Mirwaiz, tried to the best of my ability to deliver my duties and advocated for peaceful means of resolution of the issue through talks, which Inshallah I will continue to pursue,” he added.

Mirwaiz further highlighted the emotional pain caused to the people of Jammu and Kashmir by the closure of the Jama Masjid, which holds special significance in the lives of the valley’s Muslims. “Closing down of Jama Masjid causes immense pain to the people and hurts the sentiments of the entire population. To do so in the name of maintaining law and order is ridiculous, especially when tall claims of normalcy are made.”

He also raised concerns about the security measures surrounding him, questioning the logic behind his continued house arrest despite heightened protection. “A huge cordon of security bandobast has been put around me, and I am informed there is a great threat to my life. My movement is subject to the approval of authorities. I want to ask the rulers – now that you have provided me with so much protection, why am I not allowed to go to Jama Masjid? Do people who have threat perception and are provided with security not move around? Are they also put under house arrest? I do not know what to make of these strange contradictions.”

The top kashmir cleric reiterated his plea for the restoration of his freedom, calling for an end to the restrictions on his movement and the closure of Jama Masjid. “I once again ask the authorities to stop this infringement on my personal freedoms and liberties and not prevent me from going to Jama Masjid on Fridays. It’s very painful for me and the thousands of people who come there to hear the sermon and for all Muslims of JK,” he said. “I also ask them to desist from locking down Jama Masjid, the religious and spiritual center for the people of JK.
