Mehbooba Mufti Optimistic Despite Congress Setbacks in State Polls

Mehbooba Mufti, former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir and leader of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), remains undeterred despite the Congress party’s losses in recent state elections. In her response to the BJP’s victories in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Rajasthan, Mufti emphasized that winning or losing is inherent to democracy. She highlighted the challenges faced by the opposition, including the influence of money power and government agencies.

Hopeful for 2024 Lok Sabha Elections

Despite the setbacks, Mufti expressed hope for the INDIA bloc’s performance in the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections. She critiqued the current administration in the Union Territory for issues like electricity shortage and rising unemployment, accusing them of suppressing voices of protest.

BJP’s Significant Victories

The BJP, under the leadership of Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, secured a significant win in Madhya Pradesh, overcoming nearly two decades of perceived anti-incumbency. In Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan, the party achieved majorities, contrary to exit-poll predictions of a close contest.

While the Congress faced defeats in three states, it achieved a sweeping victory in Telangana, ending the decade-long rule of the Bharat Rashtra Samiti (BRS), led by Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao. This win marked a significant change in the political landscape of Telangana, a state formed in 2014.

Overview of State Elections

The state elections in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Telangana, and Mizoram, held from November 7 to November 30, have set the stage for the upcoming national elections, with parties gauging their strategies and public support.
