KTA Calls for All-Weather Connectivity for Economic Stability
The Kashmir Trade Association (KTA) is urging authorities to prioritize the establishment of all-weather connectivity for the Valley, citing persistent blockages on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway as a significant hindrance to the local economy.
Aijaz Shahdhar, President of KTA, emphasized in a statement that the Srinagar-Jammu highway, crucial for Kashmir’s economic activities, faces frequent disruptions due to adverse weather conditions, especially during the winter months. Shahdhar expressed concern that these disruptions not only create challenges for the smooth flow of goods and services but also have severe implications for the economic stability of the region.

The KTA president highlighted that the current situation not only impedes daily transportation but also adversely affects key sectors such as businesses, agriculture, and tourism, all vital for Kashmir’s economic growth. He noted, “The highway blockages lead to increased transportation costs, delays in delivery schedules, and a general slowdown in economic activities.
“Shahdhar stressed that the unreliable connectivity on the Srinagar-Jammu highway is a persistent obstacle for local businesses, resulting in financial losses and hindering the overall economic development of the region. He urged the concerned authorities to invest in and expedite the establishment of all-weather infrastructure to ensure uninterrupted connectivity throughout the year.
While acknowledging the government’s efforts in addressing the issue, the association emphasized the need for sustainable, long-term solutions capable of withstanding the region’s challenging climatic conditions. KTA is calling for a comprehensive approach that integrates technological advancements, infrastructure development, and effective disaster management strategies to mitigate the impact of weather-related disruptions.
The statement concluded by affirming KTA’s commitment to collaborating with the government and other stakeholders to find viable solutions that will enhance the resilience of Kashmir’s economy by ensuring reliable, all-weather connectivity.
