Kerala Police Files Case Against SFI Leaders for Burning Effigy of Governor Arif Mohammed Khan
The Kerala Police took action against K Anusree, SFI state president, and eight others for their provocative act of setting ablaze a towering effigy of Governor Arif Mohammed Khan at Payyambalam beach. The police filed charges under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 143, 147, and 285, citing the “dangerous act” of burning the effigy using petrol.
The incident unfolded on New Year’s Eve as SFI leaders, led by Anusree, orchestrated the incendiary act, accusing the Governor of allegedly “communalising” the state’s education sector. The massive effigy, symbolizing Mr Khan, was ignited amid slogans raised by SFI members.
Tensions between the Governor, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, and the SFI have escalated over Khan’s appointments of Hindu right-wing activists to university senates in his capacity as the chancellor. Verbal confrontations have ensued, revolving around the appointments made by Khan to various university senates within the state.
Mr Khan defended his actions by stating that the opposition stemmed from the loss of control exerted by the state government and the SFI over the universities. He referenced a recent Supreme Court decision annulling the reappointment of Gopinath Ravindran as the Vice-Chancellor of Kannur University.
The incident has sparked controversy and drawn attention to the escalating tensions between the Governor’s office, the state government, and the SFI, highlighting the friction surrounding the issue of university appointments in Kerala.
