Kashmir Experiences Severe Cold Wave with Sub-Zero Temperatures

Kashmir faced the brunt of a severe cold wave on Sunday, as the minimum temperatures across the Valley remained significantly below freezing, according to officials. Srinagar, the summer capital, registered a drop in temperature to minus 3.4 degrees Celsius from the previous night’s reading of minus 2.8 degrees Celsius. Pahalgam, situated in Anantnag district and serving as a base camp for the annual Amarnath Yatra, recorded a minimum temperature of minus 3.4 degrees Celsius, up slightly from the previous night’s minus 4.1 degrees Celsius.

Gulmarg, renowned for its ski-resort facilities in Baramulla, experienced a low of minus 3.5 degrees Celsius, down from the previous night’s reading of minus 2.5 degrees Celsius. Qazigund recorded a low of minus 2.6 degrees Celsius, Kokernag town reported minus 1.4 degrees Celsius, and Kupwara noted a minimum of minus 3.8 degrees Celsius.

Authorities highlighted that snowfall and rainfall during December intensified the persistent cold wave gripping the region. Presently, Kashmir is enveloped in the harsh 40-day winter period known as ‘Chilla-i-Kalan’, characterized by heightened possibilities of snowfall, particularly in the higher terrains. This phase will culminate on January 31.

Despite the culmination of ‘Chilla-i-Kalan’, the cold spell will persist with ‘Chilla-i-Khurd’, lasting 20 days, followed by ‘Chilla-i-Bachha’, spanning 10 days. Residents can expect sustained cold weather conditions even beyond the culmination of the initial 40-day period.
