Challenges and Divisions: Jammu and Kashmir’s Power Curtailment Schedule

The Jammu and Kashmir Power Development Department (PDD) has recently issued a comprehensive curtailment schedule for District Srinagar, set to take effect from October 1, 2023. This development aims to address the unique challenges faced by the region and ensure equitable access to electricity. In this article, we explore the details and implications of this schedule.

Metered Areas: A Four-Hour Daily Curtailment

As per the newly introduced curtailment schedule, metered areas within the city of Srinagar will experience a daily curtailment of four hours and thirty minutes. This significant disruption to electricity supply has been meticulously planned to manage the power distribution effectively. The schedule distinguishes between metered and non-metered areas to address the diverse requirements of the population.

    Non-Metered Areas: A Lengthy Eight-Hour Curtailment

For non-metered areas, the situation is even more challenging, with a daily power curtailment period lasting a substantial eight hours. This extended duration has been deemed necessary to ensure that available electricity resources are fairly distributed among all residents of Srinagar.

Division into Three Groups for Streamlined Management

To optimize the curtailment schedule, the city of Srinagar has been categorized into three distinct groups – A1, A2, and A3. Each group encompasses multiple neighborhoods and localities. This strategic division facilitates a more organized and efficient approach to curtailment management.

    Detailed Timetable for Equitable Distribution

The PDD has further divided the curtailment schedule into nine specific time frames, ranging from 8:00 AM to 9:30 PM. These time frames allow for a structured rotation of power cuts across the three groups to ensure that no single area is disproportionately affected. The schedule initiates with Group A1 experiencing a power curtailment on Mondays from 8:00 AM to 9:30 AM.

Subsequently, Group A2 faces a similar curtailment on Tuesdays in the same time frame, while Group A3 deals with a load shedding from 8:00 AM to 9:30 AM on Wednesdays. This cycle repeats throughout the week, with power cuts also occurring in the time frames from 12:30 PM to 2:00 PM and from 5:00 PM to 6:30 PM.

This meticulously planned curtailment schedule aims to mitigate the challenges associated with electricity distribution in Srinagar, ensuring that residents can manage their daily lives despite the limitations.

By dividing the city into groups and establishing clear timetables, the PDD strives to provide an equitable distribution of power resources while minimizing inconvenience for the public.
