JK Gets $14 Billion in Interim Budget, Exceeding 4-times more than IMF Aid to Pakistan
India has unveiled an interim budget of $14 billion for fiscal year 2024-25 specifically for the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. This allocation is approximately 4.5 times more than the entire amount Pakistan is seeking from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to address its economic challenges. The IMF has approved a $3 billion bailout package for Pakistan. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman emphasized the commitment to Jammu and Kashmir’s economic development, highlighting significant reforms and measures undertaken by the Union Territory Government.
Path-Breaking Reforms and Inclusive Development
Sitharaman acknowledged the path-breaking reforms in 2019, enabling measures to decentralize governance, promote inclusive development, enhance revenue generation, and boost infrastructure development. The finance minister emphasized the government’s commitment to maintaining law and order for security while implementing initiatives for economic and social development. The policy of zero tolerance against terrorism was highlighted, with effective actions by security forces leading to a significant improvement in the security situation.
Comparative Financial Commitments
On “Kashmir Solidarity Day” in Pakistan, the contrast in financial commitments was evident. While India earmarked a substantial budget specifically for the development of Jammu and Kashmir, Pakistan marked the day seeking a bailout from the IMF with a $3 billion package. In January, the IMF approved a $700 million loan tranche for Pakistan under an existing $3 billion bailout package, reflecting the country’s economic challenges and the need for external financial support.
