Jammu Temple Section Collapses, Religious Sites’ Stability Audit Planned

Part of the ancient Ranbireshwar temple in Jammu suffered structural damage following a lightning strike during heavy rainfall on a Monday morning, as reported by the Dharmarth Trust, the temple’s custodian. Thankfully, there were no casualties or injuries resulting from this incident.

The Ranbireshwar temple, a historical edifice with a 200-year-old legacy, is a revered site in Jammu. The front section of this venerable structure succumbed to the forces of nature, particularly the lightning, around 9:30 am, as explained by Ashok Kumar Sharma, Secretary of the Dharmarth Trust, during a statement to the media. In response to the incident, disaster relief teams were promptly dispatched to the scene to assess the situation and ensure public safety.

In light of this occurrence, the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) has taken a significant step by announcing a comprehensive stability audit for all places of worship within the city. This strategic decision was made under the leadership of Mayor Rajinder Sharma. Speaking to the Press Trust of India (PTI), the mayor articulated the rationale behind this initiative, saying, “The stability of building structures is an ongoing concern, and to address this, we will be conducting a thorough audit of the structural stability of all religious sites in Jammu.

“Mayor Sharma further emphasized that the JMC has issued directives to the Commissioner to carry out this comprehensive assessment, encompassing temples, mosques, gurdwaras, churches, and other religious establishments in the city. This proactive measure aims to ensure the safety and longevity of these cherished places of worship, safeguarding their historical and cultural significance.

The Ranbireshwar temple itself is a precious relic located on Shalimar Road, near the new secretariat. This architectural marvel, built under the patronage of Maharaja Ranbir Singh in 1883, holds a special place in the hearts of the local community and all those who value its historical and spiritual significance.
