Jammu and Kashmir Police Combat Fake Social Media Handles and Narco-Terrorism Threats
According to Director General of Police (DGP) RR Swain, the Jammu and Kashmir police have been actively combating both gun-wielding militants and the proliferation of false narratives propagated by numerous fake social media accounts.
In 2023 alone, approximately 8,000 fake social media handles were identified, tasked with inciting unrest and glorifying militancy in the region.
DGP Swain emphasized the police’s efforts to distinguish between genuine and non-genuine social media accounts.
Legal action under the IT Act 61 has been pursued against these accounts, and if necessary, the police are prepared to pursue international measures, including involving Interpol.
Regarding the issue of narco-terrorism, DGP Swain shed light on the global connections unveiled in countries like Turkey, Canada, and Paris. He highlighted the upcoming year, stating the anticipation of a decisive battle against narco-terrorism in 2024. Connections between narco-terror, separatism, and terrorism were exposed in 2023, with links identified in Kashmir, Jammu, Punjab, and Delhi. Notably, handlers were traced to locations such as Paris, Canada, and Turkey, including a recent Ramban narco-terror module where the mastermind was located in Turkey.
Addressing cybercrime, DGP Swain acknowledged the under-reporting of such crimes and the widespread impact beyond reported cases. The police are actively enhancing their systems to better tackle cybercrimes. Additionally, significant amounts of funds have been traced and returned to victims affected by internet and digital frauds, demonstrating the police’s efforts in handling these issues and supporting affected individuals.
