
J-K Government Forms High-Level Committees to Develop Gulmarg and Sonamarg as Global Winter Sports Hubs (Image/Shutterstock)
Srinagar, June 22 — In a significant move to promote Jammu and Kashmir as a premier global destination for winter tourism, the Government of Jammu and Kashmir has constituted two high-level committees for the development of world-class winter sports infrastructure in Gulmarg (Baramulla district) and Sonamarg (Ganderbal district).
The initiative, formalized through Government Order No. 762-JK(GAD) of 2025 dated June 20, 2025, comes as part of a broader vision to position the Union Territory on the global winter sports map while enhancing regional tourism, accessibility, and sustainability.
According to the order issued by the General Administration Department, the newly formed committees will oversee planning, coordination, and implementation of infrastructure for international-standard winter sports, especially skiing, while ensuring environmental sustainability and ease of access for tourists.

For Gulmarg, the committee includes officers include; Deputy Commissioner, Baramulla – Chairperson, Managing Director, J&K Cable Car Corporation (JKCCC) – Member Secretary, Chief Executive Officer, Gulmarg Development Authority – Member
For Sonamarg, the committee includes officers as; Deputy Commissioner, Ganderbal – Chairperson, Managing Director, JKCCC – Member, Chief Executive Officer, Sonamarg Development Authority – Member Secretary
The Chairpersons of both committees have been empowered to co-opt additional members as necessary, allowing flexibility in engaging experts and stakeholders from various sectors.
Each committee has been tasked with preparing a detailed report and set of recommendations within one month from its formation. Their key responsibilities include: Establishing winter sports infrastructure, particularly for skiing and related activities, Enhancing tourist accessibility and amenities in Gulmarg and Sonamarg, and Promoting environmentally sustainable tourism development in both locations.
