On Wednesday, the Jammu and Kashmir government took a significant step by appointing administrators for urban local bodies across the Union Territory. This appointment is effective for a period of six months or until the establishment of the municipalities, whichever occurs earlier.

According to a notification from the Housing & Urban Development Department, deputy commissioners and additional district development commissioners of respective districts have been assigned the role of administrators for municipal councils and municipal committees.

Specifically, deputy commissioners will oversee 17 municipal councils, while additional district development commissioners will handle the administrative and financial aspects of 54 municipal committees. This decision was prompted by the completion of the elected representatives’ terms across various municipal bodies in the Union Territory.Officials have clarified that these appointments are made in accordance with the provisions of the Jammu and Kashmir Municipal Act, 2000.

The primary objective is to supervise the functioning of these civic bodies until fresh elections can be conducted. The appointment of administrators is viewed as an interim measure by the UT government, serving as a bridge until civic polls can be organized in the near future.

The administrators will be entrusted with the responsibility of overseeing day-to-day operations and ensuring the implementation of development works and schemes by the municipal bodies.

The notification is expected to take immediate effect, signaling a proactive approach by the government in managing local governance during this transitional period.
