J-K Empowers Artisans Through PM Vishwakarma Yojana Launch
In a significant move aimed at empowering the artisan community in Jammu and Kashmir and enhancing their skills for self-employment, the region has achieved a milestone by becoming the first Union Territory in the country to launch the prestigious Prime Minister Vishwakarma Yojana (PMVY). The inauguration took place virtually at the Industrial Training Institute (ITI) Shopian, led by Advisor to the Lieutenant Governor, Rajeev Rai Bhatnagar, and Atul Kumar Tiwari, Secretary of the Union Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE). The inaugural session included the commencement of training for the first batch of 30 artisans specializing in Darzi Craft at ITI Shopian.
Joining the virtual launch were Sonal Mishra, Joint Secretary of MSDE; Saurabh Bhagat, Commissioner Secretary, Skill Development Department (SDD), Jammu and Kashmir; Faz Lul Haseeb, Deputy Commissioner Shopian; and other dignitaries, including Principals, Superintendents, and Instructors of Government ITIs, craftsmen, and local residents.
Addressing the audience, Advisor Bhatnagar expressed pride in Jammu and Kashmir being the first Union Territory to initiate the PMVY program with the support of the Central Government. He emphasized the importance of PMVY, which aims to provide training, tool kits, certification, marketing support, and soft loans to empower craftsmen. The Advisor highlighted the scheme’s commitment to honoring and empowering artisans who significantly contribute to the nation’s economy.
Advisor Bhatnagar commended the efforts of SDD and ITI Shopian in implementing the program, emphasizing the LG-led Administration’s dedication to fostering a skill-oriented culture for maximum employment opportunities for the youth. He encouraged craftsmen to seize the opportunity and become agents of change in Jammu and Kashmir.
The PMVY scheme is set to be operationalized in all districts of Jammu and Kashmir soon. Secretary MSDE outlined the scheme’s basic objectives, while Commissioner Secretary, SDD, and Deputy Commissioner Shopian also shared their thoughts on the occasion.
Several trainees from the first batch expressed gratitude for the opportunity, pledging to dedicate themselves to acquiring skills that would not only benefit their individual careers but also contribute to the overall development of the region.
PMVY, launched in September 2023 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, aims to recognize artisans and craftspeople through the issuance of PM Vishwakarma certificates and ID cards. The scheme includes basic training of five to seven days and advanced training of 15 days or more, accompanied by a stipend of Rs. 500 per day. Trained Vishwakarmas will receive a modern toolkit worth Rs. 15,000 free of cost, along with linkage to credit-based soft loans and marketing support for business expansion.
