The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is on a quest to include women in its highly anticipated human space flight program, the Gaganyaan mission. In a recent statement, ISRO Chairman S Somanath affirmed the agency’s preference for women fighter test pilots and female scientists to be part of this historic mission, hinting at the possibility of sending them into space in the future.
A Futuristic Inclusion: Female Humanoids in Space
ISRO’s commitment to gender equality extends to its innovative plans. As a part of the Gaganyaan mission, the agency has excitingly announced its intent to send a female humanoid – a robot designed to resemble a human – aboard its unmanned spacecraft in the coming year. This decision reflects ISRO’s ongoing efforts to make space exploration more inclusive and progressive.

Gaganyaan Mission: Aiming High and Beyond
The Gaganyaan mission is nothing short of ambitious. Its primary goal is to send humans into space on a Low Earth Orbit, situated approximately 400 kilometers above the Earth’s surface, for a three-day mission. Following their interstellar journey, the astronauts will be safely brought back to Earth, marking a significant milestone in India’s space exploration efforts.
While ISRO is optimistic about involving women in the Gaganyaan mission, Chairman Somanath acknowledged the challenges involved in identifying suitable candidates. Currently, the initial pool of candidates is expected to be from the Air Force fighter test pilot category, a group that currently lacks female representation. However, Somanath believes that as scientific activities in space expand, more opportunities for women will emerge.
Looking ahead, ISRO’s aspirations are not limited to the Gaganyaan mission. The agency has set its sights on establishing a fully operational space station by 2035, further demonstrating its commitment to pushing the boundaries of space exploration and discovery.With ISRO’s proactive approach to gender diversity and its unwavering dedication to advancing space exploration, the future holds exciting prospects for women in the realm of space science and technology.
