ISRO to Conduct Crew Module Test for Gaganyaan Mission
In a significant milestone for India’s ambitious Gaganyaan mission, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is set to conduct a crucial test flight on October 21, according to Science and Technology Minister Jitendra Singh. The test, known as the test vehicle development flight (TV-D1), will take place at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh, and is a critical precursor to the Gaganyaan mission, which aims to send Indian astronauts into space.
Testing the Crew Module
The primary objective of the TV-D1 test is to assess the crew module, which is slated to accommodate Indian astronauts during the upcoming human spaceflight, scheduled for late next year. This test will entail launching the crew module into outer space, executing a safe return to Earth, and recovering it from the Bay of Bengal. The Indian Navy has already initiated mock operations to practice the recovery of the module.
Evaluating the Crew Escape System
In addition to evaluating the crew module, the TV-D1 test will also assess the “crew escape” system. This system is designed to ensure the safe return of astronauts to Earth in the event of any issues during the spacecraft’s ascent into space. The success of this test is pivotal as it paves the way for the first unmanned Gaganyaan mission and, ultimately, a manned mission to low Earth orbit.
Upcoming Test Flight with “Vyommitra”
Before the historic manned Gaganyaan mission, ISRO plans to conduct another test flight in the coming year. This mission will feature “Vyommitra,” a female robot astronaut designed to assist and gather crucial data for future human missions.
The Gaganyaan project is a testament to India’s growing capabilities in space exploration and aims to demonstrate the nation’s human spaceflight capabilities by launching a crew into an orbit 400 kilometers above Earth and safely returning them to Indian sea waters.
This latest development underscores India’s commitment to advancing its presence in space exploration and technology, marking a significant step toward realizing the dream of sending Indian astronauts into outer space.
