ISRO Achieves 95% Domestic Sourcing for Rocket Components
ISRO Chairperson S. Somanath announced on Tuesday that approximately 95% of the components used in rockets in India are sourced domestically. He made this revelation during the 82nd Foundation Day of CSIR (Council of Scientific and Industrial Research). Mr. Somanath emphasized that ISRO’s expertise encompasses the entire space domain, with all technical work, including rocket and satellite development, and space applications being conducted in-house.
Collaborative Efforts
Somanath attributed this achievement to collaborations with various Indian laboratories, including national labs, defense labs, and CSIR labs, focused on material indigenization, technology capabilities, and research. These efforts have significantly reduced reliance on foreign components, with only 5% of materials, devices, and systems used in ISRO’s rockets coming from abroad, primarily high-end electronic components.
Indigenization in Electronics
The Chairperson highlighted ISRO’s accomplishments in electronics indigenization, including the design and manufacture of critical components such as processors for rockets and main computer chips, all produced in India. Additionally, ISRO has developed essential components like electromechanical actuators, DC power supply systems, battery systems, and solar cells within the country.
