Iran War LIVE Updates March 15 – 2026: Missiles Trigger Sirens, Democrats Condemn
Senior members of the Democratic Party and free speech advocates have sharply criticised comments by Brendan Carr, head of the Federal Communications Commission, after he warned American broadcasters about airing what he described as “hoaxes and news distortions” in coverage of the ongoing war involving Iran.
Carr suggested that television networks and broadcasters should correct their reporting before upcoming license renewal reviews, remarks that critics say could pressure media outlets to avoid negative coverage of the conflict.
The warning drew swift condemnation from Democratic lawmakers, who argued that it could undermine press freedom in the United States.
Brian Schatz, a U.S. senator from Hawaii, said the comments amounted to a directive to provide favourable coverage of the war.
“This is a clear directive to provide positive war coverage or else licenses may not be renewed,” Schatz wrote on social media, adding that the issue concerned how the war itself was being reported.
Gavin Newsom, governor of California, also criticised the remarks, calling them “flagrantly unconstitutional”.
Free speech groups echoed those concerns. Aaron Terr, director of public advocacy at the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression, said the government cannot restrict reporting on a war it is involved in.
“The First Amendment doesn’t allow the government to censor information about the war it’s waging,” Terr said.
Sirens and Explosions Reported in Israel
Meanwhile, tensions in the region continued to escalate as air raid sirens sounded across central Israel following a reported missile attack from Iran.
According to Channel 12 (Israel), loud explosions were heard in several areas as air defence systems intercepted incoming missiles. Debris reportedly fell in central parts of the country, while the Magen David Adom ambulance service treated four people who were injured while running to shelters.
The Israel Home Front Command later said the immediate threat had passed.
Regional Alerts Expand
Air raid warnings were also reported in Aqaba, a southern city in Jordan, located across the border from the Israeli resort city of Eilat.
Authorities in the United Arab Emirates said their air defence systems were actively responding to missile and drone threats launched from Iran. The UAE Ministry of Defence said the sounds heard in parts of the country were the result of interception operations.
The alerts come as several Gulf nations, including Bahrain, have also issued warnings amid fears that the conflict could spread further across the region.
