A shocking incident has come to light at a government hospital in Greater Noida, where a body was left unattended in a freezer for a staggering 17 days. The deceased, a 70-year-old patient, had been admitted to the Government Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS) on July 22 following a brain stroke and unfortunately passed away on September 23. Subsequently, the body was moved to the hospital’s mortuary.

The hospital has stated that the person who had brought the patient to the facility remained unreachable throughout the course of treatment. The neglect of the deceased’s body in the mortuary for over two weeks came to public attention recently, leading Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak to initiate an investigation into this deeply concerning incident.

In a government statement, Deputy CM Pathak, who also serves as the health minister, acknowledged the gravity of the situation and ordered a comprehensive inquiry. He directed the principal secretary of the Medical Education Department to seek an explanation from the director of GIMS.

The hospital staff’s careless handling of the deceased’s body, leaving it in a freezer for an extended period without any oversight, has raised serious questions about the hospital’s procedures and responsibilities. Deputy CM Pathak has reassured the public that a thorough investigation will be conducted, and appropriate action will be taken against those found responsible for this grievous lapse.

GIMS explained that despite making numerous attempts to contact the person who had brought the patient to the hospital, they were unable to establish communication. Consequently, they informed the local Kasna police station about the situation.

The hospital clarified that the patient had received free-of-cost treatment for over two months, with multiple departments overseeing their care. Additionally, GIMS pointed out the challenges in managing destitute patients left at the hospital by the police or attendants, emphasizing the difficulties in providing day-to-day care and disposal for such cases.

This incident highlights the need for stringent procedures and oversight to prevent such oversights and to ensure the dignity and respectful handling of deceased individuals in medical facilities.
