Indian Navy Deploys Warships to Counter Piracy and Drone Threats
In a strategic move to combat piracy and potential drone attacks, the Indian Navy has deployed nearly 10 frontline warships, equipped with marine commandos, across the northern and central Arabian Sea to the Gulf of Aden. The deployment includes major indigenous warships such as destroyers, frigates, and offshore patrol vessels, with a specific focus on the coast of Somalia.
The Navy officials revealed that these warships are actively monitoring the region to deter any incidents at sea. The increased naval presence comes in response to a recent surge in attacks on Indian merchant ships in the Arabian Sea. Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral R Hari Kumar, emphasized the proactive measures taken by the Indian Navy to safeguard against piracy threats.
Addressing the media, Admiral Kumar highlighted that, in the last 42 days, approximately 35 attacks occurred, primarily targeting Israeli-owned vessels. Notably, no Indian-flagged vessel has been attacked during this period. The Navy chief assured that anti-piracy operations were conducted in response to two incidents involving non-Indian-flagged vessels. In the second incident, where an Indian crew was aboard the ship, the Navy took swift action to ensure the safety of the crew.
Admiral Kumar also mentioned ongoing efforts to identify the source of these attacks, revealing that debris from drones collected from three ships is currently under analysis. The deployment of the Indian Navy underscores the commitment to safeguarding maritime security and protecting merchant vessels in the region from evolving threats.
