Indian Navy Commissions INS Imphal – Northeast’s First Warship
Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral R Hari Kumar, unveiled the Indian Navy’s latest stealth-guided missile destroyer, ‘INS Imphal,’ marking the first warship named after a northeastern city. The warship boasts the capability to launch extended-range supersonic BrahMos missiles and was commissioned in Mumbai in the presence of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.
Speaking about the significance of the newly inducted vessel, Admiral R Hari Kumar emphasized its name, stating, “The name Imphal is very significant. This is the first time we are naming a major warship after a city in the Northeast of Bharat.”
Highlighting the diversity within the Navy, Admiral Hari Kumar underlined the collective effort of personnel from across the country, reflecting unity in serving the nation’s cause under the tricolour.
He stressed, “Warship Imphal reflects the ethos of multicultural, multifaith, multiclass unity – Ek Bharat Shesh Bharat is the underlying theme.”
Addressing concerns over rising piracy and drone attacks at sea, the Navy Chief revealed a surge in such incidents. He emphasized the Navy’s proactive measures, intending to safeguard merchant shipping against threats, particularly in the Red Sea region.
“INS Imphal is not just equipped to counter physical threats at sea but aims to deter any attempts to undermine our national unity,” the Navy official affirmed.
INS Imphal, a state-of-the-art warship, stands as the third vessel of the Visakhapatnam-class stealth-guided missile destroyer. It was meticulously designed by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau and constructed by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd, showcasing contributions from both public and private sectors, including MSMEs and the DRDO.
The Navy’s efforts underscore a commitment to fortify maritime security against emerging threats, reflecting India’s commitment to ensuring safety and integrity across its waters.
