Indian Finance Minister Among Forbes’ Most Powerful Women
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has been recognized as the 32nd most powerful woman in the world by Forbes, a prestigious acknowledgement highlighting her influence and impact. Sitharaman, India’s first full-time female Finance Minister since May 2019, also oversees the Corporate Affairs ministry. Her previous roles include positions at the UK’s Agricultural Engineers Association and the BBC World Service before transitioning into politics.
Other Indian Women on the List
Joining Sitharaman on the Forbes list are three other influential Indian women. Roshni Nadar Malhotra, CEO of HCL Corporation, ranked at 60, has been instrumental in strategic decision-making since taking over from her father Shiv Nadar in July 2020. Soma Mondal, the first female chairperson of Steel Authority of India (SAIL), positioned at rank 70, has driven the company to significant financial growth. Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, the founder of Biocon and one of India’s richest self-made women, ranked 76th, is renowned for founding the biopharmaceutical firm in 1978 and establishing Asia’s largest insulin factory in Malaysia.
Global Leaders Lead the List
At the top of the Forbes list are notable international figures, with European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen securing the top spot. She is followed by European Central Bank boss Christine Lagarde and US Vice President Kamala Harris. This list underscores the growing influence and leadership of women in global politics, business, and other sectors.
