Indian Cybersecurity Thwarts Massive Cyberattacks During G20 Summit
At the annual conference, Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C) CEO Rajesh Kumar revealed that the G20 portal faced an onslaught of cyberattacks during the summit, with a staggering peak of 16 lakh Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks per minute. Established by the Ministry of Home Affairs, I4C aims to coordinate law enforcement agencies in addressing cybercrime comprehensively.
Kumar highlighted that the attacks targeted the G20 account soon after the website went live, escalating notably during the summit. Fortunately, the collaborative efforts of multiple Indian agencies enabled the thwarting of these attacks, ensuring the website’s security.
Expressing concerns, Kumar cited non-national foreign threat actors, operating through Virtual Private Networks (VPNs), potentially from regions like China, Cambodia, and Malaysia. However, he noted the inherent difficulty in pinpointing the exact origin due to VPN networks concealing the hackers’ true locations. Typically, non-national threat actors execute DDoS attacks from foreign nations, aiming to disrupt and sabotage websites.
The G20 summit, held at Delhi’s Bharat Mandapam International Exhibition-Convention Centre in September 2023, witnessed these cyber onslaughts. Kumar also highlighted that the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal (www.cybercrime.gov.in) has received over 31 lakh cybercrime complaints since its launch in August 2019, resulting in the registration of over 66,000 FIRs by law enforcement agencies.
Additionally, I4C prepared an analytical report on the modus operandi of the top 50 cyberattacks in 2023. Through the National Cyber Helpline Number 1930, agencies aided over 4.3 lakh victims, preventing frauds totaling more than Rs 1,100 crore over three years. This substantial effort stands as a testament to India’s commitment to combatting cybercrime and ensuring cybersecurity nationwide.
