The Indian men’s hockey team claimed the bronze medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics, defeating Spain 2-1 in a closely contested match on Thursday.

Spain initially took the lead with a penalty stroke from captain Marc Miralles in the 18th minute, but India quickly responded with two goals by their captain, Harmanpreet Singh, in the 30th and 33rd minutes.

This victory at the Yves-du-Manoir Stadium marks India’s 13th Olympic medal in hockey, further solidifying their record as the most successful team in the sport’s history.

It also represents India’s second consecutive bronze medal in the Olympics, following their success at Tokyo 2020, where they ended a 41-year medal drought.

India, ranked fifth in the world, faced a formidable opponent in world No. 8 Spain, who had previously upset defending champions Belgium in the quarter-finals.

The match started cautiously, with India gradually growing into the game and creating more opportunities as it progressed.

Despite Spain’s efforts to extend their lead, including two penalty corners, the Indian defense, led by Amit Rohidas and goalkeeper PR Sreejesh, held firm.

Sreejesh, playing his final international match, made crucial saves, particularly in the final minutes, to secure India’s victory.

As the match drew to a close, Spain’s attempts to equalize were thwarted by India’s resilient defense, ensuring that India walked away with the bronze medal, marking yet another historic moment in Indian hockey.
