The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India has been actively involved in providing consular assistance to an Indian national who has been sentenced to death in Yemen. MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi, addressing a media briefing, confirmed New Delhi’s awareness of the situation and ongoing efforts to offer support within the legal framework of Yemen.

Legal Challenges in the Yemeni Judicial System

The case concerns an Indian woman who was sentenced to death in 2020 for the alleged murder of a Yemeni national. Her appeals have been rejected by both the appellate court and the Supreme Court of Yemen. Bagchi emphasized the complexity of the situation, given that it is entwined within Yemen’s legal system, and refrained from commenting on specific steps being taken.

    Consular Assistance Amidst Legal Constraints

Bagchi reiterated the commitment to providing all possible consular assistance, while also acknowledging the limitations due to the legal processes in Yemen. The Indian government is closely monitoring the situation and exploring ways to support the citizen amidst these challenging circumstances.

India’s Role in the Second Voice of Global South Summit

In addition to this sensitive case, Bagchi also announced India’s significant involvement in the Second Voice of Global South Summit. The virtual summit, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, will feature an inaugural session followed by four parallel ministerial sessions. These sessions will cover a broad range of topics, including information technology, education, finance, and environment.

    Continued Diplomatic Engagement

The summit will also see further engagement on the second day, with additional ministerial sessions focusing on energy, health, and commerce. This global diplomatic event underscores India’s growing role and influence in international affairs, particularly among developing countries.

The MEA’s briefing thus highlighted India’s multifaceted diplomatic efforts, from addressing individual consular cases like that in Yemen to leading significant international dialogues.
